Biology and life cycle: These mites are easily identified by their elongated bodies and prominent rostrum, which is specialized for capturing and piercing prey. Their life cycle consists of the egg stage, a larval stage, three nymphal stages, and the adult phase. They thrive in humid microclimates, where they actively hunt for smaller arthropods, including springtails and other mite species.

Nature of damage: Bdellidae mites do not cause damage to plants. They are strictly predatory and lack the mouthparts necessary to feed on plant sap or tissue. If these mites are observed on crop leaves, it does not indicate a pest infestation, but rather reflects the presence of a healthy, complex ecosystem where these predators are actively hunting for smaller prey.

Harmfulness: They are essentially beneficial organisms. Because they consume the eggs and young larvae of various pests, they serve as biological control agents. Their presence is generally a sign of a balanced ecosystem. Growers should be aware that these mites do not cause necrosis, leaf discoloration, or yield reduction, making them safe for any crop.

Protection measures: Because Bdellidae act as natural enemies, chemical pest control should be avoided or carefully selected. Broad-spectrum acaricides and insecticides can devastate populations of these beneficial mites, leading to secondary outbreaks of actual crop-destroying pests. Promoting integrated pest management (IPM) practices is the best strategy to maintain their population in the field.
