Picture-winged flies (family Otitidae, often categorized within Ulidiidae) are members of the order Diptera. While they are characterized by their intricate wing patterns, they are of significant agricultural concern because their larvae inhabit and feed on various plant tissues, often causing decay and stunted growth in infested fields.
These pests have a wide host range, primarily affecting vegetable crops such as onions, carrots, and sweet corn. The larvae are especially problematic because they often attack the underground parts of plants, such as roots and bulbs, which makes early detection difficult until the damage to the plant's health becomes irreversible.
The life cycle of Otitidae is highly dependent on environmental conditions and the availability of decaying organic matter. Females lay eggs near the base of the plant or directly into soil crevices. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the plant stems or roots, completing their development within the plant tissue. Multiple generations can occur within a single growing season.
Damage is characterized by internal tunneling within plant organs, leading to chlorosis, wilting, and eventually the death of the plant. Furthermore, the tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary pathogens, such as soft rot bacteria, which rapidly accelerate the destruction of the harvest and significantly reduce market quality.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, sanitization of fields by removing crop residues, and proper irrigation management are essential. Chemical control, when necessary, involves targeting the adult stage of the fly during peak activity periods. Monitoring with traps can help determine the timing of insecticide application.
