It is important to emphasize: nycteribiids are not pests of agricultural or ornamental crops. They do not feed on plant tissues, do not damage fruits, leaves, or roots, and their life cycle is in no way linked to agroecosystems, making any request labeling them as plant pests factually incorrect.
The biology of nycteribiids is unique: adults are wingless insects with a spider-like body adapted for movement in the thick fur of their host. They possess piercing-sucking mouthparts designed solely for feeding on the blood of warm-blooded animals, confirming their status as obligate parasites.
The development cycle of these insects has nothing in common with the development of phytophagous insects. Female nycteribiids are pupiparous. They deposit a single fully developed larva that immediately pupates on the surfaces of the bat roost. The pupal stage is immobile and completes development outside the host's body.
Protection or control measures in an agronomic context are not applied against nycteribiids because they pose no threat to harvest. The presence of these insects is an indicator of a bat population in buildings or caves; if control is required, one should contact professional pest control services rather than agronomists.
