Euxesta leucomelas is a species of dipteran insect belonging to the family Ulidiidae, commonly known as picture-winged flies. These insects are recognized for their distinct wing patterns, which are essential for field identification.

Adult flies are typically small, measuring about 5–7 mm in length. Their bodies often exhibit a metallic shine, and their heads are equipped with specialized mouthparts that are adapted for feeding on plant secretions and decaying tissues.

The larvae are cylindrical, legless maggots with a whitish or cream appearance. They possess distinct oral hooks that allow them to penetrate tough plant tissues, such as the husks of corn ears.

The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Depending on environmental conditions, multiple generations can emerge during a single growing season.

These insects are highly adaptable, often thriving in fields where plant debris is not properly managed, providing ample opportunities for larval development and pupation in the soil.

What it damages

The primary economic damage caused by Euxesta leucomelas occurs in corn crops. The larvae enter the ear through the silk, where they feed on developing kernels, causing direct yield loss.

Once inside the ear, larvae remain protected from environmental factors and many conventional insecticide applications, making them a difficult pest to control once the infestation is established.

Beyond direct feeding, the damage caused by the larvae disrupts the integrity of the corn ear, creating entry points for secondary pathogens like fungi and bacteria, which lead to ear rot.

This feeding behavior reduces both the quality and the weight of the harvested grain. In severe cases, the entire ear can become unfit for commercial sale or feed purposes due to the associated decay.

The pest is a generalist and can survive on a variety of agricultural crops, using them as alternative hosts when corn is not available, which contributes to its persistence in agricultural landscapes.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of an infestation is the presence of small entry holes in the husks of corn ears. These holes are usually accompanied by fecal pellets left by the larvae.

Visible decay or mold growth on the tips of the corn ears often indicates that larvae have been feeding within the kernels. This mold is a result of the entry points created by the insect's activity.

Monitoring for adults is possible during the morning hours when flies congregate on the corn silks to feed and mate. This is the optimal time for visual inspection of the field.

If you observe premature wilting or browning of the corn silk that is not related to moisture stress, it may suggest that larvae have damaged the feeding tissues of the ear.

Upon harvesting, damaged ears will often show distorted kernel patterns and areas of necrosis where the maggots have been active during the development of the grain.

Control measures

Cultural control is the first line of defense. Tilling the soil after harvest destroys the pupae and larvae residing in the debris, significantly reducing the population for the next season.

Selecting corn hybrids with tight husk coverage is a highly effective preventative measure. A well-sealed ear prevents the flies from easily accessing the silks to lay their eggs.

Chemical control should be timed carefully with the adult flight period. Applications of registered insecticides during the silking stage can suppress egg-laying populations before they infiltrate the ear.

The use of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, including pheromone or color-based sticky traps, allows growers to monitor population levels and apply treatments only when necessary.
