The tenuous clearwing (Synanthedon tenuis) is a moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. This species is famous for its Batesian mimicry, evolving to resemble stinging wasps and hornets.
Adult moths feature narrow, largely transparent wings with dark margins and distinct wing venation. The body is slender and marked with bright yellow or orange bands, closely mimicking the appearance of vespid wasps.
The larvae are whitish caterpillars with brown heads. They spend their entire developmental period hidden deep within the stems or branches of host plants, which is typical for the Sesiidae family.
The life cycle usually spans one year. Larvae overwinter inside the tunnels they have excavated within the woody stems of their host plants, providing them with shelter from cold and predators.
Pupation takes place in the spring within the larval gallery. Before the adult emerges, the pupa uses abdominal spines to push itself partially out of the exit hole, facilitating the moth's escape.
What it damages
This pest primarily targets berry crops, such as currants and gooseberries. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage, which feeds on the plant's internal tissues.
By consuming the pith and inner layers of stems, the larvae disrupt the vascular system, preventing the upward flow of water and essential nutrients to the canopy.
Infested branches become structurally weak and brittle, leading to stunted growth, reduced berry yield, and frequently the total death of the affected branch or stem.
The presence of larval tunnels also makes the plant highly susceptible to secondary infections, such as fungi or bacteria, which can cause internal rot and weaken the entire bush.
Economic losses are significant because the infestation often remains unnoticed until the damage to the plant's structural integrity becomes irreversible.
When it appears
Adult moths typically emerge in late spring or early summer, depending on the local climate and temperature, coinciding with the flowering period of many fruit shrubs.
The moths are diurnal, meaning they are most active during warm, sunny days. This is when they seek mates and females look for suitable sites to deposit their eggs.
Eggs are laid individually on the bark near buds, leaf scars, or existing physical wounds, which provide the newly hatched larvae with easier access to the stem interior.
The time between egg-laying and larval entry into the stem is a critical window for control, as once the caterpillar is inside, it becomes protected from surface treatments.
Peak activity usually occurs throughout June, which is why monitoring and preventive strategies should be concentrated during this specific part of the growing season.
Signs of infestation
The earliest symptom of an infestation is the premature wilting or flagging of young shoots, which becomes increasingly evident during the hottest part of the day.
A closer inspection often reveals small, circular entry holes on the bark, sometimes surrounded by fine, reddish-brown frass (larval excrement) pushed out from within the tunnels.
When an infested stem is cut open, longitudinal galleries are visible, often filled with dark, decomposing debris where the larvae have been feeding.
Infected bushes often show delayed spring growth, with leaves appearing smaller, pale, and eventually yellowing or dropping prematurely compared to healthy specimens.
Branches that have been infested for more than one season are usually stunted and break easily under minimal mechanical stress, such as wind or harvesting activities.
Control measures
The primary control method is strict sanitation; gardeners must identify and prune out all infested branches back to healthy, solid wood to remove the larvae.
All pruned material must be destroyed immediately, preferably by burning or deep burial, to prevent larvae from completing their development and emerging as adults.
Pheromone traps are highly effective for monitoring adult moth populations, allowing growers to time their insecticide applications with surgical precision.
Chemical intervention is most effective when targeted at the egg-hatch and larval-entry stage, using systemic insecticides to intercept the larvae before they burrow into the plant.
