The maize billbug (Sphenophorus incurrens) is a beetle species belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). They are easily recognized by their elongated snouts used for feeding.

Adult beetles have a dark, hard-shelled body, typically ranging from brown to black. They possess a robust exoskeleton that helps them survive in soil environments.

Larvae are legless, cream-colored grubs with a distinct brown head. They are primarily borers that develop inside the host plant's stalk.

The adult size is generally between 8 and 12 mm. Identification can be difficult because they closely resemble other billbug species in the same genus.

Their chewing mouthparts are highly specialized for boring into the tough, fibrous stems of maize plants, causing significant internal damage.

What it damages

The maize billbug primarily attacks corn (Zea mays). While adult beetles feed on leaves, the most destructive stage is the larval stage.

Development involves complete metamorphosis. After completing their larval stages, the insects pupate either inside the stalk or in the nearby soil.

The number of generations per year depends on the local climate, with warmer regions often experiencing multiple overlapping cycles of the pest.

Peak activity generally occurs during the early vegetative stages of corn, which is when the crop is most susceptible to severe damage.

Signs of infestation

The most recognizable sign is a pattern of small, symmetric holes across the leaves, which appears when the leaf unfurls after being damaged by an adult beetle while it was still tightly rolled.

Plants often exhibit stunted growth or wilting during the heat of the day, indicating that the vascular system is failing to support the plant.

Severely infested plants may be easily pulled from the ground because their root systems and lower stems have been severely compromised by larval feeding.

Examining the base of the stalk will reveal tunnels packed with sawdust-like material (frass) and potentially the presence of the cream-colored larvae.

During the growing season, scouting and the application of contact insecticides can help manage adult populations before they lay eggs.
