How to identify

The palmetto weevil (Rhynchophorus cruentatus) is a beetle belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. Adult weevils are notably large, typically ranging from 25 to 35 millimeters in length, with a coloration that can vary from reddish-brown to solid black.

The defining feature of this species is its long, slender snout, known as a rostrum, which the female uses to drill holes into palm tissue for oviposition. The adult body is armored with a dense, sclerotized exoskeleton.

The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the life cycle. The larvae are cream-colored, legless grubs with a distinctive brown head capsule, specialized for boring into the fibrous wood of palm trees.

Upon reaching maturity, the larva constructs a robust, oval-shaped cocoon using shredded fibers harvested from the interior of the host tree. This structure provides environmental protection throughout the pupal stage.

The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations per year in tropical and subtropical climates where host plants are abundant.

What it damages

This weevil primarily targets various species of palm trees. While it is particularly drawn to palms that are already stressed or wounded, healthy specimens are also susceptible to severe infestations.

The larvae feed extensively on the apical meristem, or the "heart" of the palm. This feeding behavior destroys the plant's growth center, eventually cutting off the transport of water and nutrients throughout the trunk.

Signs of infestation

One of the earliest signs of infestation is the presence of small, circular holes in the palm trunk or at the base of the leaf petioles. These wounds often weep sap, which may ferment and emit a noticeable, pungent odor.

As the larvae burrow further into the tree, the central foliage will begin to yellow and wilt. This chlorosis in the crown indicates that the vascular system of the palm has been compromised by internal tunneling.

In advanced stages of the infestation, the structural integrity of the crown is lost. The fronds may collapse, or the entire top of the palm may snap off during strong winds, signaling that the apical meristem has been completely consumed.

Control measures

Effective management begins with proper cultural practices. Pruning should be kept to a minimum during peak weevil activity to avoid creating fresh wounds that release attractive odors to the pests.

Systemic insecticides are the primary chemical control method. These should be applied as soil drenches or topical sprays to be absorbed by the vascular system, targeting larvae feeding within the trunk.

Sanitation is critical in preventing the spread of the population. Any palm found to be heavily infested must be removed immediately and destroyed, either by chipping, burning, or deep burial to kill remaining larvae and pupae.

Fever-based aggregation pheromone traps can be deployed to monitor and reduce adult weevil activity in a given area. This method is highly effective in urban and landscape settings to lower the overall pest pressure.

Regular inspections are essential for early detection. Monitoring for weeping sap and adult feeding scars allows homeowners and landscape managers to intervene before the palm suffers irreparable structural damage.
