How to identify

The citrus cushion scale (Pulvinaria citricola) belongs to the family Coccidae, commonly known as soft scales. The adult female is easily identified by a prominent, white, felt-like ovisac (egg sac) that looks like a small cushion attached to the twigs or leaves.

The adult female's body is oval, slightly convex, and typically yellowish-brown in color. Excluding the egg sac, the body size ranges from 3 to 5 mm, but the presence of the white ovisac makes them much more conspicuous on the host plant.

First-instar nymphs, known as crawlers, are very small, mobile, and yellowish. This is the stage during which the pest actively disperses across the plant or is carried by wind to nearby susceptible hosts.

The species reproduces primarily through parthenogenesis, with males being rare. This reproductive strategy allows the population to grow rapidly even when environmental conditions are not ideal for traditional mating.

To accurately identify this pest, inspection should focus on the underside of leaves and along the veins, as well as on younger green branches where they prefer to settle and feed.

What it damages

Citrus cushion scale primarily affects citrus species such as lemon, orange, mandarin, and grapefruit. It can also infest various ornamental shrubs and trees in subtropical climates.

The insects feed by sucking sap from the phloem, which leads to general plant weakening. Constant sap extraction stresses the plant, reducing its ability to produce fruit and maintain healthy foliage.

A major side effect of their feeding is the excretion of honeydew, a sticky, sugary substance. This honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that covers leaves in black soot, hindering photosynthesis.

Severe infestations result in stunted growth, yellowing, and premature leaf drop. In extreme cases, the vitality of the entire tree can be compromised, leading to yield loss and potential branch dieback.

Once the tree is weakened, it becomes more susceptible to secondary diseases and other pest attacks, creating a cycle of decline that is difficult to manage without intervention.

When it appears

The life cycle of the citrus cushion scale is heavily dependent on temperature. The primary activity of the crawlers typically coincides with the spring flush and the onset of warmer weather.

Several generations can occur within a single year, provided the climate allows for continuous growth. The population size usually peaks during mid-to-late summer when egg-laying is most intense.

The pest typically overwinters as young nymphs or mated females in protected areas, such as bark crevices, near bud scales, or at the base of leaves, awaiting favorable spring conditions.

High humidity and moderate heat facilitate the rapid spread of sooty mold on the foliage, making the infestation symptoms more apparent during the summer and early autumn months.

Regular monitoring is essential from early spring through autumn. Checking for crawlers during the peak of the growing season is the most effective way to time control measures.

Signs of infestation

The first noticeable sign is the appearance of a sticky, glistening substance on the leaves and branches. This is the honeydew secreted by the feeding scales.

Soon after, a black, velvety coating (sooty mold) will develop on the leaves, which is a secondary consequence of the honeydew accumulation and a clear indicator of a scale insect presence.

Affected plants often display chlorosis, where leaves turn yellow due to nutrient and sap loss. The overall tree growth appears slowed or stunted compared to healthy specimens.

The presence of ants is a strong indicator of a citrus cushion scale infestation, as ants are attracted to the honeydew and will often protect the scales from natural predators.

Visual inspection will reveal the stationary, brown-colored adult females often accompanied by their white, fibrous ovisacs, which are clearly visible against the green foliage or brown bark.

Control measures

Cultural control is the first line of defense: prune out heavily infested branches and ensure proper tree spacing to provide adequate light and air circulation, which discourages scale buildup.

For minor infestations, mechanical control such as scrubbing the insects off with a soft cloth dipped in a mild soapy solution or isopropyl alcohol can be effective.

Systemic insecticides are highly effective for managing established populations, as they are absorbed by the plant tissue and poison the scales during their feeding process.

Horticultural oils, such as summer oils, can be applied to suffocate the crawlers. These oils form a thin film over the insects, blocking their respiratory spiracles without using toxic residues.

  • Encourage biological control agents like parasitic wasps or lady beetles.
  • Wash off sooty mold with a strong stream of water if possible.
