How to identify

The Palm borer moth (Pimelephila ghesquierei) is a member of the Pyralidae family within the order Lepidoptera. The adult moth has a wingspan of approximately 25–35 mm, featuring a cryptic coloration of shades of brown and gray that serves as effective camouflage on tree bark.

Females lay eggs on young palm foliage or within bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae, which are pale or pinkish in color, begin boring into the soft plant tissue, where they spend most of their developmental life feeding and growing.

Pupation occurs within tunnels created by the larvae inside the palm tissue. The pupa is protected by a silken cocoon reinforced with chewed plant fibers, providing security against predators and adverse environmental factors.

The biological cycle is well-adapted to tropical conditions, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the year. Population dynamics are driven by moisture levels and constant food availability, often resulting in significant economic losses.

This species is highly host-specific, primarily targeting oil palms. Its ability to complete its life cycle hidden within the trunk makes it a particularly challenging pest for plantation managers to detect early.

What it damages

The species primarily affects oil palms (Elaeis guineensis). The larvae cause damage by boring into the apical meristem or the bases of young petioles, which severely disrupts the nutrient flow within the plant.

Signs of infestation

Signs of infestation include visible holes in the bases of the palm fronds. A clear indicator of active larvae is the accumulation of frass (larval excrement mixed with wood debris) at the entry points of the tunnels.

Severe infestations lead to the yellowing and subsequent wilting of the spear leaf. If the heart of the palm is damaged, it results in the death of the entire plant or significantly stunts its further development, making it susceptible to secondary pathogens.

Control measures

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for the Palm borer moth rely on consistent monitoring using pheromone traps to track adult moth population levels. Early detection is crucial for the success of any control measure.

Manual control involving the removal and destruction of heavily infested plant parts is a standard practice in many regions. All removed material should be burned or buried deep to ensure that larvae do not complete their development.
