How to identify
The Fukai fruit fly (Paratephritis fukaii) belongs to the Tephritidae family, order Diptera. This is a specialized pest frequently found in East Asian regions.
Adults are distinguished by a characteristic mottled pattern on their wings, which is a typical feature for the entire Tephritidae family. The imago's body is small with distinct bristly features.
The larvae develop inside plant tissues, favoring the flower heads of plants within the Asteraceae family. They have a whitish or yellowish coloration and a typical maggot-like body.
Species identification often requires microscopic examination due to similarities with other members of the Paratephritis genus. A key diagnostic feature is the morphology of the wing pattern.
Adults are active in sunny weather and primarily diurnal, often concentrating on the inflorescences of host plants during the flowering period.
What it damages
The primary food source for the larvae consists of plants from the Asteraceae family. Specifically, the pest specializes in mugwort (Artemisia) and related species.
Larvae inhabit the tissues of flower heads, feeding on developing ovules and seeds. This leads to a direct loss of the host plant's reproductive potential.
In cases of mass infestation, the pest can destroy up to 80–90% of the seed material in affected heads, which is critical for seed production farms.
Damage inside the flower heads often triggers the development of secondary fungal infections due to the disruption of plant tissue integrity.
The damage is caused exclusively by the larval stage, whereas adults feed on nectar and pollen without exerting significant mechanical impact on plants.
When it appears
The life cycle is closely linked to the phenophase of host plant flowering. Typically, adults emerge during the budding and early flowering stages of mugwort.
Females lay their eggs directly into unopened buds or young flower heads using their ovipositor.
The development of one generation can take from three to six weeks depending on the temperature regime and humidity of the environment.
In temperate climates, one or two generations may develop per season, depending on the duration of the host plant's growing season.
These pests usually overwinter in the puparium stage inside plant debris or the top layer of soil beneath the host plant.
Signs of infestation
The first sign of infestation is the premature wilting or deformation of flower heads before the flower fully opens.
Upon dissecting the inflorescence, one can find characteristic tunnels bored by larvae and dark-colored insect frass.
Holes may be observed on the surface of the flower heads, through which larvae exit for pupation or through which adults emerge.
The absence of viable seeds in flower heads despite apparently normal inflorescence development is a sure sign of fruit fly activity.
The presence of adults on flower heads in the early morning is also a direct signal to initiate protective measures.
Control measures
The foundation of protection is the agrotechnical method: destruction of plant debris after the growing season, as this is where the pest overwintering occurs.
Timely deep plowing of the soil in inter-row spaces allows for the destruction of puparia located in the soil or fallen plant residues.
Chemical control methods are effective during the peak flight period of adults, before females can lay eggs inside the buds.
The use of systemic insecticides is permissible only in cases of high crop threat and under strict adherence to safety regulations regarding pollinators.
