How to identify
The Japanese wax scale (Metaceronema japonica) belongs to the Coccidae family, order Hemiptera. The adult female has a convex, oval-shaped body covered in a dense, waxy, reddish-brown secretion.
Physically, the insect resembles a small bump on the bark, making it difficult to detect when the population density is low. Males are rare, significantly smaller in size, and possess wings, allowing them to search for females.
The nymphs, known as crawlers, are very small, mobile, and yellowish. This stage is responsible for the dispersal of the pest across the canopy and to neighboring plants.
Accurate species identification often requires microscopic examination of the chitinous covers, as the insect resembles many other coccids commonly found on trees.
In natural habitats, the pest prefers protected areas of the bark, such as branch crotches and near buds, which helps them survive harsh winter conditions.
What it damages
This pest attacks a wide range of woody plants and shrubs. It poses a particular threat to fruit crops, including plums, peaches, and various stone fruits.
In ornamental gardening, the wax scale is often found on viburnum, honeysuckle, maple, and many other broad-leaved species, infesting both young shoots and older branches.
The pest feeds by extracting sap from the bark and tender shoots. This process leads to general weakening of the plant and a significant slowing of vegetation growth.
Heavy infestations of the Japanese wax scale can cause premature leaf drop and the drying out of individual branches, reducing the overall winter hardiness of the plant.

When it appears
The life cycle of the Japanese wax scale is typically univoltine (one generation per year). Second-instar nymphs overwinter attached to the bark in protected locations.
In spring, as temperatures rise, the overwintering nymphs resume feeding and grow rapidly. This developmental phase lasts until the beginning of summer.
Adult females lay eggs beneath their bodies; the female's body hardens into a protective waxy shield. This process usually occurs in late May or June.
The emergence of crawlers is prolonged, which complicates control measures. Mass emergence of the new generation is typically observed in June and July.
By autumn, the nymphs transition to their second stage and move to more protected areas of the tree, where they remain until the arrival of spring warmth.
Signs of infestation
The first visual sign of infestation is the presence of rounded or oval convex formations on the bark, which are tightly attached to the surface.
A characteristic indicator is the presence of honeydew on leaves and branches. This sticky secretion produced by the insects often attracts ants.
Sooty mold fungi frequently grow on the honeydew, causing leaves and branches to be covered in a dark, almost black layer, which inhibits photosynthesis.
Close inspection may reveal deformation or curling of young shoots. In areas where the insects feed, bark necrosis and cracks are often visible.
During heavy infestations, the plant canopy looks depressed, leaves lose their healthy luster, turn yellow, and fall prematurely, signaling significant distress.
Control measures
Preventive measures include regular sanitary pruning of infested branches, where the pests tend to concentrate, followed by their immediate removal from the site.
During the dormant season, in early spring or late autumn, applications of horticultural oils are effective as they create a film that smothers overwintering nymphs.
During the crawler emergence phase, which is the most vulnerable period, the use of systemic contact-stomach insecticides that penetrate plant tissues is recommended.
