How to identify

The pistachio fruit moth (Kermania pistaciella) is a member of the Tineidae family. It is a small moth, with adults measuring about 12-14 mm in wingspan, characterized by narrow, silver-grey wings that provide excellent camouflage against the bark of pistachio trees.

The larval stage is the primary cause of damage. The caterpillars are creamy-white with a dark head and are specialized to bore into the tissues of Pistacia vera, making them a significant agricultural threat.

The lifecycle of this moth is univoltine, meaning it completes only one generation per year. This singular generation strategy makes the timing of control measures extremely critical for orchard success.

The moth is geographically limited to regions where pistachio cultivation is dominant, often causing widespread damage if left unchecked in large-scale plantations.

During the day, adults remain relatively inactive, resting on branches, which makes visual detection of the moths themselves very difficult without the use of specialized pheromone traps.

What it damages

Physical evidence of the moth's presence includes the accumulation of larval frass (excrement) around the entry holes on either the fruit or the young shoots.

Chemical control should be timed based on pheromone trap data to ensure that insecticides are applied exactly when the larvae are vulnerable and before they bore into the fruit.

Biological control, using specific parasitoid wasps that target the eggs or larvae of Kermania pistaciella, has shown promise in reducing population numbers without chemical reliance.

Orchard management should focus on maintaining tree vigor, as healthy trees are often more resilient to the secondary effects of larval damage and can withstand lower-level infestations.
