These insects belong to the order Coleoptera and the family Coccinellidae. Unlike their predatory relatives that control aphid populations, these specific beetles have evolved to consume plant material, making them an important target for agricultural pest management strategies.
They mainly attack solanaceous crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, as well as various cucurbits. The damage manifests as skeletonized leaves, where the beetles and their larvae scrape away the epidermis, leaving only the veins behind, which severely stresses the plant.
The life cycle involves egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay clusters of eggs on the underside of leaves. The larvae are often characterized by branched spines and are highly destructive, as they consume the leaf tissue voraciously, often resulting in complete defoliation if left unchecked.
Effective management includes integrated pest management (IPM) techniques. Cultural practices such as removing crop residues, rotating crops, and weeding are essential.
