Tomoceridae
Systematic position. Tomoceridae belong to the order Collembola, commonly known as springtails. These small hexapods are primarily soil-dwelling organisms that usually feed on decaying organic matter. However, in greenhouses and indoor plant production, they often switch to consuming living plant tissues, becoming significant agricultural pests.

Crops affected. Tomoceridae are particularly troublesome in greenhouse environments, affecting a wide range of vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers. Ornamental flowers and delicate nursery seedlings are also highly susceptible to their feeding, especially when the growing media remains constantly wet and rich in organic matter.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of eggs, several nymphal stages, and adults. They thrive in humid conditions and are sensitive to desiccation. In controlled environments, they can breed continuously throughout the year. Their small size and cryptic habits make them difficult to detect until significant plant damage becomes visible.
Damage and pest status. The damage is primarily caused by feeding on root hairs, germinating seeds, and the base of stems.

Biological controls such as predatory mites (e.g., Hypoaspis miles) are highly effective in suppressing springtail populations in greenhouse settings.
