Sisyridae, commonly known as sponge flies, are a family within the order Neuroptera. Unlike most members of this order, which are terrestrial, the larvae of sponge flies are aquatic. They are specialized insects that occupy a very specific ecological niche associated with freshwater environments.

The primary organisms targeted by these insects are freshwater sponges (Spongillidae). In aquaculture and pond management, the presence of sponge flies can be problematic because they damage the sponges that serve as natural biofilters. The depletion of these sponges often leads to degraded water quality in sensitive systems.

The biology of the sponge fly follows a complete metamorphosis. Females lay eggs on vegetation overhanging the water. Upon hatching, the larvae drop into the water, actively searching for a host sponge. Using specialized mouthparts, they extract nutrients from the sponge tissue. After several molts, the mature larvae crawl out of the water to pupate in silk cocoons.

Damage caused by sponge flies involves the destruction of the sponge's architecture. As the larvae feed, they compromise the integrity of the host, leading to the reduction of its filtration capacity. This damage is particularly harmful in managed fish farms where high water clarity and balanced chemistry are essential for the health of aquatic crops.

Control measures primarily focus on integrated water management. Since sponge flies are native elements of the ecosystem, large-scale chemical extermination is not recommended. Instead, managers should focus on removing excessive vegetation near the banks to disrupt the life cycle, while ensuring that the aquatic environment remains healthy enough to support resilient sponge populations.
