Fruit bats

Fruit bats are known to damage a wide variety of high-value crops, including mangoes, bananas, citrus, papayas, and grapes. They are particularly attracted to ripe, sugary fruits, and because they often feed in large groups or colonies, they can consume or destroy a significant portion of an orchard's production in a single night.

The biology of these animals is defined by their high mobility and nocturnal foraging habits. They travel long distances to locate food sources and often return to the same feeding grounds repeatedly. Their reproductive rate is relatively low, but their long lifespan and ability to adapt to human-altered landscapes allow them to maintain stable populations despite management efforts.

The damage caused by fruit bats is characterized by chewed, partially eaten, or discarded fruit fragments left on the branches or the ground. Furthermore, the animals may break small branches and damage bark during landing or takeoff. The presence of damaged fruit often leads to secondary issues, including insect infestations and the development of fungal rot, which can spoil the remainder of the crop.

Effective management strategies focus on exclusion and non-lethal deterrents. Because of their intelligence and habituation to simple noise, integrated pest management is necessary. Key practices include the installation of heavy-duty netting to physically isolate the fruit from the bats, the use of visual deterrents, and the removal of secondary food sources near the orchard to reduce its attractiveness.
