Poduridae, commonly known as springtails, are a family of small hexapods that live primarily in damp soil and leaf litter. While they are often considered beneficial decomposers in natural ecosystems, they can become significant pests in greenhouse environments and indoor potted plants when population levels explode due to excess moisture.

These pests primarily cause damage by feeding on roots, root hairs, and germinating seeds. When food sources in the soil (such as decaying organic matter) are depleted, springtails turn their attention to healthy plant tissue. This feeding activity inhibits the plant's nutrient uptake, leading to yellowing foliage, stunted growth, and in severe cases, plant collapse.
The biology of springtails is closely tied to moisture. They thrive in waterlogged soil conditions, which provide the high humidity necessary for their survival and rapid reproduction. Females lay eggs in clusters within the soil, and the life cycle from egg to adult is relatively short, allowing populations to double quickly if environmental conditions remain favorable.
Identifying an infestation is straightforward: these tiny insects, often white or gray, jump when disturbed. You will likely notice them crawling on the soil surface shortly after watering. If your seedlings begin to fail or show signs of stress without an obvious pathogen, it is highly recommended to check the soil for signs of high springtail activity.
Controlling springtails requires a multi-pronged approach that focuses on habitat modification. The most effective strategy is to let the soil surface dry out completely between waterings, which forces the pests to vacate the top layer. Additionally, improving soil drainage and reducing the amount of organic matter in potting mixes helps keep populations at manageable, non-damaging levels.
