These organisms primarily target greenhouse-grown crops, including leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and herbs, as well as vine crops like cucumbers. Their activity is often concentrated around the root zone, where they find both shelter and food sources within the hydroponic solution or growing medium.

The biology of Naididae is characterized by rapid development and high reproductive capacity. They reproduce both sexually and through paratomy (asexual division), allowing them to establish massive populations in a very short time if the system’s filtration and sanitization protocols are inadequate.

The damage caused by these worms is primarily mechanical, as they feed on root hairs and young root tissue. This feeding behavior stunts plant development, causing leaf chlorosis and reduced nutrient uptake. Furthermore, the lesions created by the worms act as entry points for root rot pathogens, which often cause much greater damage than the worms themselves.

Control and management strategies are essential for maintaining a healthy growing environment. Prevention is key:

  • Maintain high water quality through efficient filtration.
  • Monitor dissolved oxygen levels, as low oxygen promotes their activity.
  • Perform regular system cleanings to remove accumulated organic sediment.
  • Use appropriate antimicrobial treatments for hydroponic solutions as needed.
