The life cycle of a mantispid is highly complex. Upon hatching, the mobile larvae actively seek out hosts. Many species are known to enter the egg sacs of spiders to feed on the developing eggs. In terms of agricultural damage, mantispids are not direct pests of crops. They do not consume plant sap, foliage, or roots.
