The life cycle of the Hydridae involves both asexual reproduction through budding and sexual reproduction. Their ability to regenerate from small fragments makes them persistent if the physical conditions within the system remain favorable for their attachment and feeding.
Their detrimental effect is primarily physical, as they often clog small-bore tubing, filters, and pump intakes, reducing the efficiency of nutrient distribution. Furthermore, their stinging cells, used to immobilize prey, may cause localized stress on delicate root hairs in aquatic plant cultivation.
