Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Ephemeroptera and the family Ephemeridae. These are ancient hemimetabolous insects. Their life cycle is uniquely bifurcated: a prolonged aquatic stage as nymphs, followed by a very brief terrestrial stage as adults, primarily focused on reproduction.
Nymphs reside in river or lake beds, feeding on detritus and organic sediment. Adult mayflies lack a functional digestive system and do not feed at all. Their short lifespan, ranging from a few hours to a few days, is entirely dedicated to swarming and the preservation of the species.
Mayflies are not direct pests of crops, as they do not consume vegetation. However, they are considered nuisance pests due to mass emergence events. Large swarms can clog irrigation spray nozzles, contaminate fruit surfaces, and create hazardous conditions on machinery and infrastructure during harvest or field preparation.
Management practices for mitigating mayfly impacts include:
- Installing fine mesh filters on irrigation water intake systems.
- Managing artificial lighting near fields to avoid attracting swarms during peak seasons.
- Using protective screens for greenhouses and indoor agricultural storage.
