Systematic position: The family Bombycillidae (waxwings) belongs to the order Passeriformes. In agricultural settings, these birds are recognized as nuisance pests that can cause significant damage to orchards and ornamental berry plants during late winter and early spring migration periods.

Affected crops: Waxwings primarily feed on fleshy fruits and berries. They cause the most damage to late-harvest crops such as mountain ash (rowan), viburnum, sea buckthorn, and various holly species. Additionally, in early spring, they often consume the reproductive buds of fruit trees, including apples and cherries, negatively impacting the season's yield.
Biology and life cycle: Waxwings are migratory birds that breed in the northern boreal forests. During winter, when natural food sources become scarce, they form large flocks and wander southward in search of food. Their behavior is highly social, and flocks can quickly strip entire gardens or orchards of berries once they arrive in an area.
Damage and pest status: The damage is characterized by the rapid consumption of fruit, which can lead to total crop loss if left unprotected. Their habit of stripping trees of buds in the early spring is particularly destructive, as it directly reduces the fruiting potential of the trees and weakens the overall health of the branches.
Control measures: Effective management involves non-lethal deterrent strategies. Visual deterrents such as reflective tape, holographic devices, and bird-scaring kites or predatory bird models are commonly used. Sound-based deterrents, such as electronic calls of raptors, can also be effective. For small-scale orchards, covering vulnerable shrubs with fine-mesh netting is the most reliable protection.
