Arrhopalitidae are a family of springtails (order Collembola) known for their globular appearance. These tiny arthropods are ubiquitous in soil ecosystems and damp environments. While often overlooked as harmless decomposers, they can become significant agricultural pests in greenhouse conditions and commercial nurseries when environmental factors trigger population outbreaks.

These pests primarily target tender plant tissues, including germinating seeds, young root systems, and lower leaves in constant contact with moist soil. They are particularly problematic in propagation media and container gardening, where high organic matter content provides a stable food source and habitat for their rapid reproduction.
The life cycle of Arrhopalitidae is heavily dependent on moisture levels. Females lay eggs in clusters within the soil, and larvae pass through several molts before reaching maturity. Because their life cycle is short, they can complete multiple generations in a single season, leading to persistent infestations if the environment remains continuously humid.
Damage caused by these springtails often goes unnoticed initially. It includes small irregular holes in the epidermis of leaves or feeding pits on seedling roots. This feeding activity not only weakens the plant directly but also creates entry points for soil-borne pathogens, such as Pythium or Rhizoctonia, often leading to damping-off disease in susceptible plants.
Effective management begins with strict irrigation management to prevent excessive surface moisture. Improving drainage and ensuring that the top layer of soil dries out between waterings effectively suppresses population growth. For more severe infestations, the application of biological controls, such as predatory mites or entomopathogenic fungi, is recommended to restore balance without chemical over-reliance.
