Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Adults typically hibernate on land near water bodies, hiding in plant debris or soil. In spring, they return to open water where females deposit eggs on submerged plant tissues. Nymphs pass through several developmental stages on the water surface, feeding and growing until they reach maturity.

Feeding habits: Water striders are opportunistic predators. Their diet consists primarily of small insects and other invertebrates that fall onto the water surface. They detect their prey by sensing minute vibrations transmitted through the water. Once a victim is detected, the water strider uses its specialized mouthparts to pierce the prey and consume its body fluids.

Pest status and damage: Gerridae species do not cause any direct damage to crops. They do not feed on plant sap, tissues, or seeds, making them harmless to agricultural production. In many cases, they serve as beneficial elements within the local ecosystem, helping to control populations of various small insects near irrigation channels or farm ponds.

Management and control: No control measures are needed for water striders as they pose no threat to farming. In fact, maintaining healthy water bodies around fields is often recommended for biodiversity. The use of broad-spectrum pesticides should be avoided near water to protect these and other non-target aquatic organisms, ensuring the ecological stability of the farm environment.
