Systematic position. Strongylidae are a family of parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Strongylida. While many species are well-known parasites of vertebrates, several related phytoparasitic nematodes within the class Secernentea are significant pests of agricultural crops. Their ability to colonize root systems makes them a persistent threat to global plant production and soil health.

Crops affected. These pests primarily infest a wide range of vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants. They are particularly destructive in greenhouses where conditions favor their rapid spread. Common targets include tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and various cereal crops, leading to severe agricultural losses if infestations are not detected and managed early.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of these nematodes is fundamentally tied to soil moisture and the presence of susceptible host plants. Juveniles emerge from eggs in the soil and seek out host roots to invade. Once inside the tissue, they feed and undergo several molting stages. Optimal soil moisture and moderate temperatures significantly accelerate their reproductive rate, allowing for multiple generations within a single growing season.

Nature of damage and pathogenicity. Infestation by Strongylidae typically results in stunted growth, chlorosis, and general plant decline. The formation of root galls or lesions disrupts the uptake of water and essential nutrients, causing the plant to wilt even under adequate irrigation. This root dysfunction severely limits harvest volume and quality, and in high concentrations, can result in total crop failure.

Protection measures. Managing these pests requires an integrated approach to minimize soil-borne populations:

  • Implementing strict crop rotation schedules with non-host species.
  • Utilizing nematode-resistant plant varieties whenever available.
  • Executing thermal soil treatment or steam pasteurization in intensive farming.
  • Applying biological control agents such as predatory fungi or bacteria.
  • Ensuring complete removal of infected plant residues and weeds at the end of the season.
