The family Hypodermatidae, commonly known as warble flies, belongs to the order Diptera. Adults resemble bumblebees in appearance, possessing a vestigial mouthpart which means they do not feed during their short adult life. They are obligate parasites of mammals and are considered one of the most economically significant pests in livestock production systems.

While not direct pests of crops, Hypodermatidae cause severe damage to cattle, deer, and other livestock. The resulting condition, known as hypodermosis, impacts animal welfare and agricultural productivity. The presence of these flies leads to significant economic losses for farmers due to reduced milk yields, decreased weight gain, and ruined leather quality.

The life cycle begins when the female lays eggs on the hair of the host animal. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the skin and begin a long migration through the host's connective tissues and internal organs. After several months, they migrate to the back of the animal, where they create breathing holes in the skin and form characteristic warbles or bumps.

The damage caused by these parasites is both direct and indirect. Larvae feed on the host's tissues and secretions, causing localized inflammation, pain, and stress. The breathing holes create open wounds that are susceptible to secondary bacterial infections, while the skin itself is perforated, making it worthless for the leather industry and devaluing the livestock.

Effective control relies on systemic antiparasitic treatments administered during specific times of the year. The strategy focuses on eliminating the larvae during their migratory phase before they reach the back of the animal. Integrated pest management, including regular herd monitoring and precise timing of chemical applications, is essential to minimize the impact of Hypodermatidae infestations.
