The primary hosts for these pests include various species of Rosaceae, most notably apple, pear, and plum trees, as well as birch and hazel. In agricultural settings, they are particularly problematic during the early spring when the young foliage is most vulnerable to colonization and subsequent mining by larvae.

The lifecycle of the Eriocraniidae is strictly univoltine, meaning one generation per year. Adults emerge in early spring, often coinciding with the first bud break. Following mating, females insert their eggs directly into the leaf parenchyma, where the developing larvae will begin feeding immediately upon hatching.

Damage caused by these larvae is characterized by the formation of distinctive blotch mines. As the larvae consume the internal layers of the leaf, the upper and lower epidermis separate, leading to visible discoloration and tissue death. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, reducing the tree's overall photosynthetic capacity.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Eriocraniidae. Cultural practices such as removing fallen leaves can disrupt the lifecycle by destroying dormant pupae. Chemical control, when necessary, involves applying systemic or contact insecticides early in the spring to target adults before egg deposition occurs.
