The fig scale, Eulecanium ficiphilum, belongs to the family Coccidae (soft scales). Adult females are characterized by a convex, almost hemispherical body of a brown color, which attaches firmly to the bark of the host plant.
The life cycle consists of the egg, the crawler (first instar larva), the second instar larva, and the adult stage. Unlike armored scales, soft scales do not produce a separate protective shell; instead, the insect's own hardened cuticle serves as its defense mechanism.
Adults typically measure between 3 and 5 mm in length. Their appearance often blends in with the bark of the host tree, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of infestation.
The pest overwinters as second-instar larvae, usually hiding in crevices of the bark, under bud scales, or in protected areas on the branches until spring temperatures trigger their activity.
Reproduction is primarily parthenogenetic, with males being rarely observed. This biological advantage enables the population to recover quickly and colonize new branches effectively.
What it damages
The primary host for this pest is the fig tree. The insects colonize branches and twigs, feeding directly on the plant's phloem sap, which depletes the tree's vital resources.
