How to identify

The Egyptian gall mite (Eriophyes aegyptiacus) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, which belongs to the order Acari. These are microscopic arthropods invisible to the naked eye.

The body of this mite is elongated and worm-like, typically ranging in color from whitish to translucent, which allows them to hide effectively within plant tissues.

Unlike other mites, they possess only two pairs of legs, which are situated near the front of the body, facilitating their movement within narrow spaces.

They lead a hidden lifestyle, spending most of their life cycle inside the plant tissues, often forming protective structures known as galls.

Accurate identification is challenging and typically requires microscopic examination to distinguish them from other closely related species in the family.

What it damages

The primary host plant for this species is the olive tree (Olea europaea), where it targets young, developing parts of the plant.

By feeding on the sap of epidermal cells, these mites disrupt the plant's normal physiological processes and nutrient distribution.

The feeding activity causes the plant to react by producing abnormal tissue growth, which serves as both food and shelter for the mite colony.

Severe infestations lead to a decline in tree vigor, reduced growth rates, and a significant drop in the overall quality and quantity of the fruit yield.

Long-term damage weakens the host, making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and various opportunistic secondary diseases.

Signs of infestation
