Cecidophyes thailandica is a specialized species of eriophyid mite, belonging to the order Trombidiformes. These mites are microscopic organisms that cannot be seen with the naked eye, requiring high-magnification microscopy for identification.
They possess an elongated, worm-like body and only two pairs of legs, which are positioned at the anterior end. This anatomical feature is a diagnostic characteristic that distinguishes them from other groups of mites.
The life cycle is closely tied to the physiological state of the host plant, particularly the litchi tree (Litchi chinensis). They thrive in high humidity and warm temperatures typical of their native distribution.
The biology of this mite involves rapid development, with several generations occurring within a single growing season. Mites disperse via wind, insects, and contaminated nursery stock, making them highly effective at spreading within plantations.
Unlike spider mites, they do not produce silk webs, but their feeding activity induces the plant to create complex structures, which serve as both protection and a nutritional source for the colony.
What it damages
This mite is a major pest of litchi, specifically targeting young, developing tissues. It is widely known for causing "erinose" or velvety galls on the leaves of host plants.
When feeding, the mites inject salivary enzymes that trigger abnormal cell proliferation in the leaves. This results in the formation of dense, hair-like galls on the underside of the leaves, ranging in color from light brown to deep reddish.
Severe infestations cause leaves to curl, become brittle, and lose their photosynthetic capacity. This leads to reduced tree vigor, leaf drop, and decreased overall production of fruits.
Flower panicles are also susceptible. If the mites infest the inflorescences during the bud stage, flower development is stunted, often resulting in complete floral necrosis and total yield failure.
Long-term infestation significantly weakens the litchi tree, making it susceptible to various environmental stresses and secondary infections by fungi or bacteria.
Signs of infestation
The most recognizable sign of Cecidophyes thailandica is the presence of brown or reddish velvety patches on the lower surface of litchi leaves, known as erinose galls.
Distorted, curled, and thickened new leaves are strong indicators of an active colony. These leaves often fail to expand properly and remain stunted throughout their life.
The appearance of "witches' broom" symptoms on young branches, where terminal buds cease to grow and produce clusters of deformed shoots, indicates high mite density.
Infected inflorescences may fail to bloom correctly, appearing dried or necrotic. The individual flowers may be covered in a fine, powdery residue left by the feeding mites.
Growers should focus their monitoring efforts on new flush cycles, as the tender tissues of fresh leaves are the primary site for initial colonization and population expansion.
Control measures
Effective management requires a combination of chemical and cultural practices. Sulfur-based acaricides are widely used and remain one of the most effective tools against eriophyid mites.
Sanitation is critical; all heavily infested leaves and branches must be pruned and removed from the orchard. Burning these materials prevents the mite population from re-infesting healthy trees.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies suggest using biological control agents, such as predatory phytoseiid mites, which can naturally regulate C. thailandica populations if chemical inputs are reduced.
Avoid excessive nitrogen application to prevent rapid, succulent growth that is overly attractive to these mites. Balanced nutrition promotes stronger cell walls in the leaves, which hinders the mite's ability to feed.
Quarantine measures and careful inspection of new saplings before planting are the first line of defense to prevent introducing this pest into previously unaffected areas.
