How to identify

The Blackberry mite (Cecidophyes reticulatus) is a microscopic pest belonging to the Eriophyidae family. Unlike common spider mites, these pests are invisible to the naked eye, measuring only about 0.15 to 0.2 mm in length.

They possess a worm-like body and, as the name suggests, they have only two pairs of legs located at the front of their bodies. These anatomical features are characteristic of the eriophyid group, which includes many significant agricultural pests.

Because of their minuscule size, their presence is usually identified only by the specific damage they cause to the plant tissues. They lack a respiratory system and absorb oxygen through their cuticles, requiring a humid environment for survival.

These mites live in sheltered areas, such as dormant buds, leaf folds, and the base of young shoots. Their cryptic behavior allows them to avoid direct exposure to predators and adverse environmental factors.

Dispersal is mainly passive, occurring through wind movement, rain splash, or hitchhiking on insect vectors. Infested propagation material is the most common way for the mite to spread to new areas and commercial plantations.

What it damages

Blackberry mites primarily target blackberries, causing significant damage by feeding on the sap of growing tissues. By piercing the plant cells, they introduce salivary enzymes that interfere with normal plant development.

Feeding on flower buds and developing fruit is the most critical issue. This leads to malformed buds, reduced fruit set, and the production of deformed, woody, or unevenly ripened berries that are essentially unsaleable.

The damage caused by these mites can be cumulative, weakening the host plant over time. As the mite population grows, the entire plant may show signs of severe stress, including stunted growth and diminished vegetative vigor.

Apart from the physical damage, these mites are known vectors for certain plant viruses. The combination of direct feeding and potential virus transmission creates a complex challenge for blackberry growers.

Economic losses result from both yield reduction and the loss of produce quality. Fruit affected by the mite often fails to develop the characteristic gloss and uniform shape, rendering it useless for fresh market sale.

When it appears

The lifecycle of the Blackberry mite is synchronized with the phenological stages of the host plant. They typically overwinter as mated females, hiding deep inside the buds or crevices in the bark of the canes.

When temperatures rise in the spring, the females emerge from their overwintering sites and move onto the newly emerging shoots and developing buds to begin feeding and egg-laying.

There are several overlapping generations per season, with the pace of reproduction accelerating in warm, humid conditions. A single generation can complete its cycle in as little as two weeks during optimal summer weather.

The population reaches its peak during the blooming and fruit formation phase. This period is the most active stage for the mite and the most important window for applying control measures.

As days grow shorter and temperatures drop in the autumn, the mites begin their migration to dormant positions for the winter. This survival strategy ensures the population persists from year to year.

Signs of infestation

The most common sign of infestation is the deformation of leaf tissue, which may appear wrinkled, curled, or stunted. Leaves may also exhibit patches of chlorosis, although this is often overlooked.

The most devastating symptoms appear on the fruit. Infected berries may fail to ripen properly, remaining hard and bitter, or showing a very irregular, "lumpy" appearance that is distinct from healthy berries.

Flower clusters might be distorted or fail to open fully, which directly impacts the yield. In severe infestations, the entire fruit set might be aborted, or the berries might dry out prematurely.

Plants affected by the mite may show a lack of vigor and shortened internodes. Growers often observe an overall stunted appearance compared to neighboring, uninfected plants.

Chemical control focuses on applying specific acaricides during the critical emergence window. It is important to spray when the mites are migrating and most exposed, ensuring thorough coverage of the foliage.

Proper field management, including weed control and maintaining optimal plant spacing, helps reduce humidity levels and limits the places where mites can hide and proliferate.

Regular monitoring of the plantation for symptoms is necessary. If damage is detected, early intervention is crucial to prevent the pest from spreading throughout the entire planting area.
