Austrotachardiella is a genus of scale insects within the family Kerriidae, known for their unique ability to secrete significant amounts of resin. This protective coating forms a hard, lacquer-like shell over the insect's body.
Adult females are sessile, remaining firmly attached to the host plant's bark throughout their adult life. Their body shape is generally globular or pear-shaped, hidden entirely under the resinous structure they create.
The insects are remarkably well-camouflaged, as their resinous secretions often mimic the color and texture of the host plant's bark. This makes them difficult to detect during routine plant inspections.
The crawler stage, or first-instar larva, is the only mobile phase of the life cycle. These tiny, light-colored crawlers actively search for suitable bark surfaces to settle, feed, and begin secreting their protective resin layer.
Identification often requires careful examination under a microscope to distinguish specific morphological features that are shielded by the dense resinous material covering the female's body.
What it damages
These pests primarily target various woody shrubs and trees by extracting phloem sap. This feeding process deprives the host plant of essential nutrients needed for healthy growth and development.
Continuous feeding causes physiological stress to the tree. As nutrients are siphoned off, the plant may exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and a general decline in health, especially in branches heavily infested by colonies.

Sooty mold growth, appearing as a dark, dusty coating on leaves or branches, is a frequent secondary symptom. This mold thrives on the honeydew produced by the scales.

Horticultural oils can be used during the dormant season to soften the resinous layers and suffocate the overwintering insects, making the population more manageable for subsequent treatments.
Pruning out and destroying heavily infested branches is a crucial mechanical control method. This reduces the source of new crawlers and helps prevent the infestation from spreading to other parts of the plant.
Maintaining plant health through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the host withstand the stress caused by the feeding insects. Healthy plants show better recovery and higher resistance to damage.
