Anastrepha paradentata
Anastrepha paradentata
Description
How to identify
Anastrepha paradentata is a fruit fly species within the family Tephritidae (order Diptera). As a member of the diverse Anastrepha genus, this species is considered a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the Neotropical regions where it impacts fruit production.
Adult flies possess the characteristic patterned wings typical of their genus. Accurate diagnosis of Anastrepha paradentata requires precise examination of the aculeus (ovipositor) tip and other morphological characters, as many members of the genus appear morphologically similar to the naked eye.
What it damages
This pest primarily infests fruit crops, with a strong preference for members of the Myrtaceae family, such as guava (Psidium guajava). The larvae are internal feeders that consume the succulent parts of the fruit, causing extensive internal damage.
The infestation results in the degradation of fruit quality, rendering the crop unmarketable for fresh consumption or commercial processing. Because it is an internal feeder, the damage is often discovered only when the fruit reaches an advanced stage of decay.
Signs of infestation
The most common sign of infestation is the appearance of small puncture marks on the fruit surface, which are created by the female fly when inserting eggs into the pulp. These points of entry often lead to localized discoloration or tissue softening.
As larvae develop inside, the infested fruit frequently exhibits premature ripening and dropping. Upon slicing the fruit, one will find internal galleries filled with larval excrement, a mushy consistency of the pulp, and the larvae themselves, often rendering the interior completely liquefied.
Control measures
Effective management begins with strict phytosanitary regulations designed to prevent the introduction of this pest into non-infested regions. Growers should implement regular surveillance using synthetic attractant traps to detect early populations.
Cultural control practices are essential and include the rigorous collection and disposal of fallen fruit, which effectively breaks the pest's life cycle. Chemical treatments, primarily utilizing protein-bait sprays, are focused on targeting adult flies before they successfully oviposit in developing fruits.
