The larvae are the destructive stage of the pest. They are legless, cylindrical, and white or yellowish in color, usually growing up to 8–10 mm long during their development.

The life cycle undergoes complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages, adapted to the cool early-season temperatures of agricultural regions.

Because they are small and active during the early growth stages of crops, identification often relies on recognizing the specific symptoms of damage rather than sighting the flies themselves.

What it damages

This pest specifically targets small grain cereals, primarily wheat, barley, and rye. It can also infest various wild grass species found near agricultural areas.
