Watermelon variety 'Serpen' is one of the most popular melon crops widely grown in Ukraine. This annual plant with long trailing vines and a strong root system requires plenty of heat, sunlight, and well-heated soil for successful growth. Watermelon seeds begin to germinate at temperatures no lower than +15 °C, while optimal temperature for full development of vines and fruit set is between +22 to +30 °C. The plant is sensitive to frost, especially during seedling and bud formation stages, so protection during cold periods is essential. In Ukraine, watermelon 'Serpen' is traditionally grown in southern and central regions such as Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odesa Oblasts. However, with the use of seedlings and plastic coverings, successful cultivation is possible in more northern areas — from Vinnytsia to Cherkasy Oblasts, and even up to Poltava and Kyiv Oblasts. With proper care, including timely watering, soil loosening, and nutrient-rich soil, the plant can produce fruits weighing from 2 to 10 kg even under moderate climate conditions. Growing watermelon 'Serpen' requires following agronomic recommendations, including selection of quality seeds, proper planting, and timely harvest. It is also important to consider possible pests and diseases that may affect fruit quality and yield. With proper management, this watermelon variety will be an excellent choice for farmers and enthusiasts wishing to obtain tasty, juicy fruits under Ukrainian climate conditions.
