Safflower Petrovich

Petrovich variety is a type of oil safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) grown for seeds, subsequently processed into oil and cake. It belongs to the medium maturity group, exhibits high drought resistance, and has a vegetation period of about 97 days. Yield reaches 2.28 t/ha, with oil content in seeds ranging from 38–41% and protein content around 15.5%. Petals are yellow, while seeds are white.

For sowing Petrovich, a rate of 15–28 kg/ha is recommended for row sowing and 9–18 kg/ha for wide-row sowing. The plant has medium height, and inflorescences consist of multi-seeded heads with a diameter of 3–4.5 cm and double bracts. Seeds do not shatter, have an oval-four-sided shape, and a dense shell, which ensures good preservation during transport.

Petrovich is characterized by resistance to biotic and abiotic stressors and a heat-loving nature. Oil from the seeds of this variety is widely used in cooking (for frying, salad dressings), the production of margarine, varnishes, and paints that do not yellow over time. The meal after processing serves as a protein supplement for feeding domestic animals and birds. Additionally, safflower petals contain a natural dye used in the food industry and for making natural paints.

Thus, Petrovich represents a highly effective oil crop with a wide range of applications for processed products, making it attractive to agrarians seeking to increase field profitability.
