Reed canary grass LUGOVSKOY 1

Field Performance: Working with «Lugovskoy 1» Reed Canary Grass

Managing forage crops in waterlogged or low-lying areas often leads to equipment downtime and yield losses. The «Lugovskoy 1» variety, developed by the V.R. Williams FRC, is designed specifically for these challenging conditions. For the operator, this variety offers a reliable, dense sod that supports heavy machinery, reducing the risk of deep rutting during wet seasons.

Operations and Maintenance

The key to maximizing profit with this variety is timing. With a protein content of 12–18%, keeping the harvest window precise is critical. If left too long, the stems lignify, causing unnecessary wear and tear on mower blades and forage harvester intake components. Proper timing ensures the forage remains palatable and nutrient-dense, simplifying processing and storage.

• Moisture Resilience: Thrives in wet, flood-prone areas where other grasses would fail, ensuring a consistent yield year after year.
• Regrowth Rate: Highly responsive to cutting; when managed correctly, it provides multiple cuts per season, maximizing the return on land use.
• Equipment Efficiency: The dense, uniform sward minimizes soil ingestion into the cutting mechanism, extending the life of blades and keeping the harvest clean.

By establishing a robust root system, «Lugovskoy 1» creates a stable field surface. This is a significant advantage when operating in unpredictable weather, as the sod provides a stable base for heavy trucks and trailers, reducing logistical bottlenecks during harvest windows.
