Hemp Sula

Operational insights: Cultivating the monoecious 'Sula' hemp variety

Choosing the 'Sula' variety for commercial hemp production is primarily about streamlining field operations. As an operator, the main advantage is the monoecious nature of the crop: the uniformity in maturation between male and female plants drastically simplifies harvesting. You avoid the need for complex combine calibration and ensure a homogeneous output, which is essential for consistent fiber processing quality.

Cultivation and field management

With a vegetation period of 85–115 days, 'Sula' allows for a highly predictable harvest schedule. Developed by the Institute of Agriculture of the North-East of the NAAS of Ukraine, this variety is well-adapted to local soil conditions. However, performance heavily depends on seedbed preparation; depth control during sowing is critical, and standard pneumatic seeders require precise calibration to ensure optimal emergence.

• Processing efficiency: With a fiber content of 28–32%, this variety is highly efficient for textile and pulp production. Proper handling of the straw ensures high-grade yields.
• Oilseed handling: The 30–33% oil content requires careful management in grain dryers. Controlling the temperature is essential to prevent oil oxidation and maintain commodity value during storage.
• Compliance and logistics: The low THC content guarantees full compliance with strict safety regulations, ensuring peace of mind during transport, inspection, and processing stages.

For those managing large-scale operations, 'Sula' is a workhorse variety. It handles agricultural variance well but responds best to rigorous adherence to density norms. It is a stable, high-performance crop designed for businesses that prioritize predictable yields over unpredictable experiments.
