The Black Prince onion variety was created at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Selection and Seed Production of Vegetable Crops (VNIISСОК). The variety is included in the State Register of Selection Achievements of the Russian Federation, approved for use in the CENTRAL (3), VOLGO-VYATSKY (4) and WEST-SIBERIAN (10) regions of Russia, intended for growing onion sets sown in early spring and in late autumn (annual crop) and through seedlings (biennial crop).
Bulbs weighing 60-100 g, round, shape index 0.97. Color of dry outer scales dark-purple. Bulb dense, number of buds 2-3. The variety is low-clump, 1-2 bulbs per clump. Medium-maturing — 100-105 days, yield 40-50 t/ha. Bulb has a semi-sharp taste, contains 13-14% dry matter, 8-11% sugars, high storability. The variety is of universal use.
Seed plant usually has 2-3 erect flower stems 80-100 cm tall, with swellings 2.0-2.5 cm thick. Leaf and stem color green with slight waxy coating.
Distinguished by high content of quercetin (anti-cancer substance) and selenium in bulbs.
