Agrotechnical Guidelines for Growing Kassard Hybrid

Kassard is a Dutch-bred hybrid from Rijk Zwaan, officially registered in Ukraine in 2026. Achieving the genetic potential of this variety requires strict adherence to professional cultivation practices, focusing on plant density and nutrient management.

Planting and Spacing

Transplanting is the preferred method for this hybrid. Seedlings should be 35–45 days old before moving to the field. To ensure optimal nutrient uptake and light penetration, a planting density of 60x40 cm or 50x50 cm is recommended. Overcrowding should be avoided, as it reduces head weight and increases the risk of fungal pathogens due to poor air circulation.

Soil Requirements and Irrigation

Kassard performs best in well-drained loamy or sandy-loam soils with a neutral pH (6.5–7.5). Consistent moisture is critical for success. Drip irrigation is highly recommended to maintain soil moisture at approximately 80% of field capacity. Fluctuations in water supply during the head-filling stage must be avoided, as they can cause head splitting and reduce post-harvest quality.

Growth Phase Management

• Seedling Stage: Maintain moderate temperatures (below +20°C during the day) to prevent leggy growth.
• Vegetative Growth: Focus on nitrogen-based fertilization to support robust foliage development.
• Head Formation: Transition to potassium and phosphorus fertilizers to enhance head density and storage shelf life.

Regular inter-row cultivation is essential to break soil crusting, improve oxygen access to the root zone, and eliminate weed competition for water and nutrients.
