Reducing Row Spacing Can Increase Winter Wheat Yields

Choosing the right row spacing remains one of the critical agrotechnical issues in winter wheat cultivation. Sowing parameters are often determined by the design of sowing units rather than scientific research findings. At the same time, ongoing debates persist among farmers regarding the advantages of narrow-row versus wide-row sowing methods.

Proponents of wider row spacing at 25-30 cm note that increasing an individual plant's feeding area to 60-65 cm² can raise its individual grain productivity up to 3.5 g and promote higher yields. However, experimental data clearly indicate the agronomic benefits of a more uniform plant distribution across the field area.

While maintaining the overall seeding rate, reducing row spacing allows plants within the row to be spaced more sparsely. Notably, in Great Britain, narrowing row spacing to a configuration close to a square feeding area provided a yield increase of 10.3 dt/ha. Other European countries also strive to reduce row spacing to 8-10 cm, and according to some estimates, narrowing the spacing by 1 cm can increase grain yields by 0.7-1.0%.

Traditionally in Ukraine, winter wheat was sown with a 15 cm row spacing, primarily due to the design features of legacy seed drills. However, this method does not always meet the biological requirements of various varieties under specific soil and climatic conditions. Modern grain seed drills now allow farmers to choose row spacings ranging from 7.5-10 cm up to 18-25 cm.

Narrow-row sowing offers several distinct agronomic advantages. Due to faster canopy closure between the rows, the soil surface dries out less, helping to preserve productive moisture reserves while enhancing the crop's ability to compete with weeds. Nevertheless, this practice places higher demands on field preparation, tractor power due to a greater number of working units, and overall farm equipment capabilities.
