Ministry of Agriculture issues National Agriculture Policy 2083 in Nepal
The Nepalese government has launched a new national policy to modernize the agricultural sector, promote commercial farming, and ensure long-term food security.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forest and Environment in Nepal has officially issued the National Agriculture Policy 2083. Minister for Agriculture, Gita Chaudhary, announced that the policy is designed to transform Nepal’s agricultural sector into a modern, commercial, and self-reliant system. Developed in alignment with the federal governance structure, the policy prioritizes national food security, food sovereignty, and increasing farmers' income through strategic production growth.
The policy identifies and seeks to resolve long-standing challenges in the sector, such as land fragmentation, the prevalence of barren land, inadequate irrigation infrastructure, and the negative impacts of climate change. It also addresses the critical issue of youth migration and the reliance on agricultural imports. By promoting industrialization and commercialization, the ministry aims to make Nepal self-sufficient in essential food items and boost the competitiveness of domestic agricultural products.
A significant focus of the 2083 policy is on international market access. The government plans to enhance the global presence of Nepali agricultural goods through branding and strategic market promotion. Furthermore, the policy advocates for the development of environmentally friendly agricultural practices, the protection of biodiversity, and the integration of digital technologies and local knowledge. These efforts aim to foster innovation and establish agriculture as a highly regarded, dignified profession in the country.
Key priority areas detailed in the document include inclusive mechanization, expanded research and technology transfer, the enforcement of minimum support prices, and the strengthening of agricultural insurance. The government is also committed to providing concessional agricultural loans to facilitate growth. Improving food hygiene and nutrition security is another cornerstone of the policy, ensuring that the development of the sector directly benefits the public's well-being.
According to the Ministry, effective implementation will rely on seamless coordination between federal, provincial, and local government bodies. The strategy incorporates necessary legal and institutional arrangements, while emphasizing the importance of private sector participation and regular, rigorous monitoring. The ministry expressed strong confidence that the policy will significantly contribute to employment generation, import substitution, and the building of a prosperous and resilient national economy.
