Ukraine and Finland address protecting agro-exports and overcoming the maritime blockade

Russian strikes on the ports of Greater Odesa are creating significant risks for Ukraine's grain exports and global food security. By this autumn, Ukraine may face a shortage of storage capacity due to the blockage of three deep-water ports. In response, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine held talks with Finnish partners to identify ways to stabilize agricultural exports.

The Ukrainian delegation was headed by Deputy Minister Denys Bashlyk. The Finnish side was represented by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Finland to Ukraine, Tarja Fernández, and Deputy Head of Mission Leena Saarikoski. The parties discussed the critical needs of Ukrainian farmers arising from the current maritime crisis.

A key topic of discussion was the necessity of providing temporary grain storage facilities. Ukraine requested equipment from Finland, specifically polymer sleeves, which allow farmers to store crops directly in the field. Issues concerning the humanitarian demining of agricultural land, a prerequisite for safe field operations, were also addressed during the meeting.

During the talks, the role of Finland as an active member of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was highlighted. The Finnish side confirmed its readiness to contribute to diplomatic and technical efforts aimed at protecting international commercial shipping and unblocking Ukrainian ports. Denys Bashlyk emphasized that Finland's support is vital both within humanitarian initiatives and on the international stage.

Beyond addressing current logistical challenges, the parties agreed to expand bilateral cooperation. Future plans include the development of advanced agricultural processing, the implementation of innovations, and climate-smart farming. The parties also discussed attracting Finnish investment for the recovery of Ukraine's agro-industrial complex, which is essential for strengthening the sector in the long term.
