Baitadi Family Transforms Commercial Farming Into a Profitable Village Enterprise

Agriculture has become the primary source of income for Madan Raj Bhatta from Hatas, Patan Municipality-10, in the Baitadi district of Nepal. Having initially started by growing vegetables solely for family consumption, the head of the family has fully shifted to a commercial business model over the past decade. His wife and two sons are actively involved in the farm, noting that they face no major challenges in finding markets for their produce.

A key focus of their business is the cultivation of chili peppers (khedekhursani), which began in 2072 BS. Today, this crop covers 16 ropanis of land. The family utilizes modern agricultural technologies, such as mulching and specialized equipment, which have significantly increased their yields. In years with favorable market prices, the revenue from chili production alone reaches 800,000 rupees, and by reducing expenses on seeds and logistics, they manage to save approximately 400,000 rupees in profit.

The total area of the Bhatta Multi-Agro farm is about 40 ropanis. Beyond chili peppers, the family grows kiwis, lemons, and oranges. The son, Deepak, explains that their expansion into fruit farming began with self-education via online resources like YouTube. Since 2076 BS, the orchard has grown to 5 ropanis, containing 200 kiwi plants, despite early challenges regarding technical knowledge and market accessibility.

In the last two years, the family has significantly diversified by adding poultry farming to their operations. With an investment of 1 million rupees in a modern poultry house, they now maintain a flock of over 2,000 layer chickens. The farm produces approximately 1,600 eggs daily, which are sold in various markets across the Baitadi, Bajhang, and Darchula regions. The family highlights that the primary obstacle to scaling further is logistical constraints and transportation issues rather than a lack of market demand.

Despite an annual turnover exceeding 10 million rupees, after deducting costs for fertilizers, labor, poultry medicine, and transportation, the family generates a net annual profit of about 3 million rupees. Deepak Bhatta is convinced that with hard work, the opportunities in their village are as viable as working abroad. The family is now seeking local government support to improve road infrastructure to further facilitate their growing enterprise.
