Higher Vessel Insurance Costs Add $35/t to Grain Transportation

Despite the ongoing blockade of Black Sea ports, Ukraine continues to export grain through Danube ports and via transit corridors through neighboring countries such as Romania and Poland. According to GrainTrade analysts, this increases logistics costs and severely limits export prices for domestic agricultural producers.

Market experts note that even the rising cost of vessel insurance has noticeably increased logistics expenses. Specifically, the base vessel insurance rate for a voyage to Black Sea ports of Russia or Ukraine before the 2024 blockade ranged from $150,000 to $250,000 per voyage.

However, by October 2026, the cost skyrocketed to reach $2.5 million per voyage. This represents a massive 10-to-16-fold increase in insurance costs, directly impacting the financial burden on agricultural exporters and traders moving grain abroad.

Experts calculated that due to the surging cost of war risk insurance, freight rates for grain transportation increased by $35.7 per ton. This creates additional financial barriers for the agricultural sector amidst ongoing export challenges.

Market participants and analysts continue to monitor the situation within the logistics sector. High freight and insurance costs remain key factors constraining the profitability of grain exports and impacting domestic purchase prices.
