Queen's University pioneers sheep wool for plastic-free seaweed farming
Researchers at Queen's University Belfast are testing the use of sheep wool as a sustainable, biodegradable alternative to plastic ropes in seaweed farming.
Scientists at Queen's University Belfast have unveiled an innovative project aimed at addressing the pressing issue of microplastic pollution within the aquaculture sector. The research team is investigating the viability of using sheep wool as a biodegradable substitute for the traditional plastic ropes commonly utilized in the cultivation of seaweed and kelp.
Currently, the seaweed farming industry relies heavily on synthetic polymers to create the frames on which algae grow. However, these materials frequently break down under the stress of saltwater and UV exposure, eventually fragmenting into microplastics. By utilizing sheep wool—a byproduct of local farming—researchers hope to develop an environmentally friendly substrate that naturally decomposes once its purpose is served.
The initiative bridges the gap between agricultural needs and environmental stewardship. Wool possesses unique structural properties that make it an ideal medium for algal spores to attach to. Researchers highlight that using locally sourced materials not only reduces the carbon footprint of marine farms but also provides a potential new market for wool, which is often considered a low-value commodity in contemporary agriculture.
Beyond its biodegradability, wool provides essential natural nutrients that may support seaweed development during the early stages of growth.
