Massive Sunflower Exports from Moldova: What Is Pressuring Farm-Gate Prices?

During the period from July to September 2026, the Republic of Moldova demonstrated high export performance for oilseeds, shipping abroad 60,500 tons of sunflower seeds. This volume represents a 9.5% increase compared to the same period last year, when 55,200 tons were exported to external markets.

The most active month was September 2026, which accounted for the vast majority of shipments. In September alone, domestic exporters dispatched over 51,400 tons of sunflower seeds across borders, securing the country a strong standing in the international arena.

According to agricultural market experts, specifically Iurie Rija, Moldova has securely established itself in third place among the leading sunflower suppliers to the European Union market, trailing only major players such as Argentina and Serbia.

Despite the robust start to the season and an increase in average export prices—which averaged 11.89 MDL/kg between July and September 2026, up 9.2% from the previous year—local farmers have not experienced a proportional rise in income. In September, during peak export volumes, the average export price stood at 11.02 MDL/kg, remaining very close to the 10.87 MDL/kg recorded in September 2025.

The main driver behind this discrepancy is soaring logistics expenses. Most export contracts are based on delivered-to-buyer terms, and transportation tariffs have doubled compared to last year. Consequently, the net price of seeds at the farm gate remains comparable to the previous season, dampening the financial benefits of strong foreign trade.
