Potassium Fertilization for Successful Wintering of Winter Crops

The yield of winter crops largely depends on their ability to survive the winter period successfully. This process is significantly influenced by providing plants with balanced nutrition. Specialists from Ukravit share insights on how to enhance plants' potential for successful wintering and the crucial role that potassium plays in these processes.

Mykola Kyriienko, product manager for microfertilizers at Ukravit, notes that relying solely on available potassium in the soil from autumn and foliar feeding in spring is a major mistake. Even with a sufficient content of this element in the soil, the root system's ability to absorb it decreases depending on temperature conditions, moisture availability, and the balance with other nutrients.

Potassium is of great importance in preparing for wintering. Adequate potassium nutrition for winter cereals increases cell sap concentration, reduces the amount of unbound water in cells, increases sugar content in the tillering node, and maintains cell turgor. For rapeseed, potassium is a key component of autumn nutrition: it regulates stomata operation, facilitates the outflow of sugars from the leaf blade to the taproot, increases the diameter of the root collar, and raises potassium ion concentrations in growth point cells.

To feed winter cereals, rapeseed, and winter peas in the autumn period, especially for later-sown plants, Mr. Kyriienko recommends using the anti-stress potassium fertilizer Avangard NPK Potassium. One liter of the fertilizer contains 400 grams of potassium (calculated as K2O) and 2 grams of the amino acid proline, which is necessary for forming plant cell protection.

The fertilizer is quickly absorbed by plants within 2 to 4 hours. Proline enhances stress resistance, particularly to low temperatures, and provides antifreeze properties. Applying the fertilizer in autumn increases dry matter and sugar accumulation, improves photosynthesis, strengthens root system development, and increases crop resistance to diseases and stress.
