How Molybdenum Deficiency Manifests in Rapeseed Crops

Molybdenum deficiency in rapeseed manifests as narrow, one-sided leaves, their deformation, and the acquisition of a spoon-like shape. This is stated in an article titled 'Hidden Hunger' published in The Ukrainian Farmer magazine by Hryhoriy Hospodarenko, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences and Professor at Uman National University.

Suspicion of this micronutrient deficiency grows when signs of nitrogen deficiency appear despite adequate nitrogen nutrition. In such cases, an excess of nitrates accumulates within the plant, which negatively impacts overall crop health and resilience.

Specifically, the accumulation of nitrates leads to a decrease in the rapeseed's frost resistance. Furthermore, plants show an increased sensitivity to herbicides, along with a higher susceptibility to infections such as gray mold.

Experts note that molybdenum deficiency is significantly exacerbated on acidic soils. The problem can also be intensified by high humus content and the application of high rates of organic fertilizers, because molybdenum is readily sorbed by organic matter.

Additionally, the deficiency can be triggered by applying physiologically acidic fertilizers, such as ammonium sulfate. Agronomists must take these factors into account when managing crop nutrition and protection programs.
