Indonesia steps up livestock controls ahead of Eid al-Adha
Indonesia’s quarantine agency has deployed special task forces on major livestock routes ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026 as cattle, goat and sheep movements surge.

Indonesia’s Quarantine Agency, Barantin, has tightened supervision of sacrificial-animal movements ahead of Eid al-Adha 2026 by deploying special task forces on key distribution routes. Agency head Abdul Kadir Karding said on May 21 at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta that the teams had been formed at regional technical units and animal, fish and plant quarantine centers serving as major routes for livestock traffic.
Karding said the new task forces are meant to ensure that inspections are properly conducted at points of origin, along transport corridors and in destination areas. He noted that he had chaired a coordination meeting specifically to make sure every relevant unit handling sacrificial-animal movement had established its team. In practice, the agency is moving into a heightened-control mode during the seasonal rise in shipments before the religious holiday.
Barantin is also applying a broader risk-mitigation package. The measures include analysis of livestock-movement trends, review of obstacles seen in previous periods, preparation of facilities and infrastructure, stronger regulations, deeper cross-sector coordination and more intensive monitoring of animal traffic. The agency has additionally expanded patrols on illegal routes to prevent livestock smuggling.
Karding said that if smuggling is detected, the animals will be destroyed and enforcement action will follow quarantine procedures. At the same time, he said Barantin had so far found no smuggling cases and no infectious animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, lumpy skin disease or anthrax. He added that only one or two animals had shown minor health problems during transport and were immediately isolated and treated by veterinarians.
The backdrop is a sharp increase in animal movements. Data from Barantin’s Best Trust information system show that cattle movements reached 198,925 head from January through April 2026, up 70 percent year on year. Goat and sheep movements rose 77 percent to 103,216 head. With demand for animals rising ahead of Eid al-Adha, the agency is treating quarantine surveillance as a central tool for keeping disease out of the domestic livestock market.
